DanSun’s “Torn”: https://www.dansunphotos.com/Best-Sellers/i-tSTJw9X
When I discovered DanSun’s work, I threw self-doubt out the window and emailed him to see if he would talk to me about first responders and mental health for my thesis. He graciously spent over an hour chatting on Zoom with me about his art, his lived experience as a paramedic, his work as a motivational speaker, and his future projects. He’s an incredibly talented and selfless individual. I hope to meet him in person one day at one of his many stops around the world in his efforts to continue smashing through the walls of mental health stigma.
Due to the state of the current world and travel restrictions, there have not been as many events and conferences for him to share his knowledge, but keep his website on your radar: https://www.dansunphotos.com/Events
Daniel’s images are a tearing-open of the mind of a person who has seen many things that many of us will not. The layers of photographs intertwined with surreal images of ghosts, angels and devils to combine the real and the unknown. I’m grateful to this man for sharing what is in his mind, because the act of purging is both cathartic for him and enlightening for the rest of us. This is what it is like to shoulder a burden that many have no idea is being carried. This is what the world sometimes chooses to ignore because vicarious trauma did not have a face, but through Daniel’s stunning portrayals it does, in fact, have many.
